The book identifies and analyses the factors that influence the social behaviour of young people living in the Russian Arctic – those whom we have named “the children of the 1990s”. The research project that led to this book started with a question “What motivates modern-day northerners (born between 1980 and 1995) to remain in the North or to leave?” In search for the answer, the group of anthropologists conducted fieldwork in five arctic regions of Russia: Murmanskaia region (oblast’), Yamal-Nenets Autonomous region (okrug), Taimyr Peninsula, Kamchatskii region (krai) and Magadanskaia region (oblast’). We explored life trajectories, hopes and fears of young men and women; dwellers of the tundra and taiga, villages and towns of the North; residents of subsidized northern regions and “donor regions;” young people, who consider themselves indigenous, and those who consider themselves the children of incomers. The chapters of the book focus on the social mechanics of northern migration, mobility patterns and perception of place, creative economy and strategies for the community development, tourism and infrastructural shortages, the exchange systems and social comfort.
