ISLAM AND THE CITY =

abstract

The city has since long functioned as a laboratory for religious movements, new religious expressions and diversities. In this paper I will discuss the presence of Islam in Berlin through an ethnographic account of young Muslims who participate in a Muslim youth organization. Material manifestations of Islam in Berlin, such as youth wearing headscarves and purpose built mosques, have created fierce public debates and opposition. In which ways are young Muslims part of constituting the urban landscape of Berlin as part of the long journey towards recognition of a minority religion? How is Berlin not only an empty template in the youth’s religious formation, but also part of the configuration of their Islamic religiosity? Religious practices are shaped by the city-space in which the participants are finding themselves, at what moment in the histories of those cities and the contemporary circumstances of the religious participants. In Berlin, the young Muslim’s religiosity is shaped by the multicultural image of Berlin as well as by a general anti-Islamic sentiment in the public and media. I will discuss how the youths are pursuing a “fun Islam” and devout fashion while simultaneously transforming urban spaces into religious sites. In this process the youth are both accentuating their differences and claiming rights and space to be young, religiously observant, and Muslim Berliners.

13:00. Vladimir Bobrovnikov (NIAS). Islamizing Public Space in Early Post-Soviet Makhachkala: a Case of Hybrid Urban Religiosity

abstract

This presentation discusses introduction of Islamic symbols, monuments and practices into town public space happened in the beginning of the post-Soviet Islamic growth in Makhachkala. It also touches upon the reception of new public Islamic spaces in secularized urban society. The study is based on still unpublished anthropological data I gathered in Dagestan in the 1990s. At that time I witnessed a rapid Islamization of secular urban public space Muslims started to master after the end of Soviet antireligious persecutions. They opened mosques and prayer houses, madrasas and Islamic higher schools, openly performed collective religious rituals, published and diffused new Islamic media and popular literature of the Islamic appeal (da'wa), made town authorities to rename streets after local Muslim heroes and build Islamic monuments. This drastic cultural change was accompanied with growing rural-to-town migration from mountain districts resulted in the appearance of Islamized rural suburbs of Makhachkala. The return of Islam to public space in post-Soviet towns still lacks of serious conceptualization. It is usually misunderstood as the expansion of traditional rural Islam into secular urban life that made it more backward and offended secular-minded urban population. However local religious tradition was mostly destroyed under the Stalinist repressions and the following Soviet modernization. Last Soviet generations of Dagestani Muslims were more modern than their pre-revolutionary ancestors. By the end of the Soviet rule most of them continued to live in the countryside but the more and more resettled to towns. It is noteworthy that in the 1990s Islamic growth did not destroyed but transformed secular public space in towns. Most old Soviet symbols, monuments, street names coexisted in Makhachkala with new Islamic ones. Moreover, new Islamic public space inherited some basic features of Soviet urban culture. The early post-Soviet religiosity had an explicit hybrid character. I propose to study it from a comparative post-socialist and post-colonial perspective taking into account works examining similar synchronous processes in non-Muslim countries with socialist and colonial past.

13:30. Matteo Benussi (Cambridge University), Between Heritage and Ethics: Debating Islamic Spaces in Tatarstan

abstract

In this paper I look at how varying conceptualisations of Islam produce different experiences and appropriations of space in the multi-confessional Tatarstan Republic. Particular attention is given to historically charged heritage sites, on the one hand, and everyday 'halal spaces', on the other. It shall be argued that whereas the former are experienced as symbolically relevant, the latter's function is that of enabling ethical self-transformation. While heritage sites connect individuals to the body politic through storytelling, halal spaces allow Muslim subjectivities to flourish through bodily practices. This comparison allows to appreciate how the contentious nature of Islam in Tatarstan is experienced at the intimate level of the individual. Particular attention shall be devoted to urban spaces.

15:15. Welmoet Boender (Leiden University). Urban Islam in the Netherlands: Studying Mosque Design as Part of Identity Politics or as Urban Aesthetics?

abstract

In the Netherlands the number of newly built mosques has grown fast in the past decades, attracting attention of academic observers, politicians and citizens alike. In this presentation, I will discuss how purpose built mosques have integrated into the urban landscape of Dutch cities and towns.

Studying the architectural design of mosques provides relevant insights in the integration process of Muslim communities in the Netherlands. It not only reveals how Muslims have negotiated with many partners to be accepted as full citizens, often meeting considerable resistance in a socio-political climate with increasing ‘Islamophobia’. The architectural choices also show different symbolic ways through which local mosque communities emphatically express their socio-religious identities.

In this presentation I will provide meaningful examples of these different ways, showing how local mosque communities actively strive for recognition as an integral part of the Dutch multicultural urban landscape.

I will argue that, while many studies use the analytical concept of ‘identity politics’ to understand these processes, we need to extend our analytical framework while including the notion of ‘urban aesthetics’.

abstract

(Amsterdam University). The Case of the Muslim Charity in Contemporary Kazan: between Moral Economy and Symbolic Capital
