The Helsingin Sanomat Foundation (HSF) is deeply concerned about the situation around the European University at St. Petersburg (EUSP). The HSF has with great anxiety followed the alarming news about the possible revocation of the university’s license.

The hearing on the EUSP lawsuit challenging the inspection acts of Rosobrnadzor took place today at the 9th Arbitration Court of Appeal. The court session has been adjourned until July 13, 2017 in response to a corresponding petition made by Rosobrnadzor. The supervisory agency intends to prepare an additional position on the calculation of the share of "practicing teachers", taking into account the clarifications received from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The university supported Rosobrnadzor's petition.

The talk will be given in Russian. Stephen Lovell is Professor of Modern History at King's College London. He has published widely on Russian history, including Summerfolk: A History of the Dacha, 1710-2000 (Cornell University Press, 2003) and Russia in the Microphone Age: A History of Soviet Radio, 1919-1970 (Oxford University Press, 2015).

Every day we read items in the newspapers about the impact of social media on our lives. Have we lost even the possibility of privacy? Is our attention span diminished? Are young people obsessed by selfies? This lecture will provide an overview of an extensive research project on the use and consequences of social media around the world that is resulting in 11 open access books that try and provides a more authoritative guide to the impact of social media on society.

The collapse of the Soviet Union left behind a group of generally weak states in Eurasia, including the main successor state, Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s effort to rebuild the Russian state has led to contradictory assessments of the transformation of the Russian state. Western scholars disagree both about the success of Putin’s state-building project and the ability of leaders to affect stateness, given structural conditions.

My talk is a literary and philosophical reflection on migration as more than a political crisis — a crisis of the conscience of our times.

Berlin is famous for its lack of industry and finance economy, as well as its pre-war quarters and lifestyles. Having to deal with an intense history after 1989; a variety of images from the past are brought back, for the contemporary city imagery. The city is also imagined with a variety of new references: art and artists, civil society activities or urban interventions which play an enormous role in the production of metropolisness of Berlin. The city is imagined as unique, based on the past; and also dynamic, new and visionary.

Could a machine read my mind? Could it read my mind better I can? Could it find out what I really think, what I truly feel, and may not be aware of? It does not matter whether the machine scans my brain or analyses of my data, whether it is neuroscience or, as we say, Big Data. The point is: can a machine be an instrument of introspection?

We, the undersigned Oxford academics, wish to express our surprise that the European University at St Petersburg is facing a legal threat to terminate the tenancy of its premises at the Small Marble Palace.

The hearing on the EUSP lawsuit challenging the inspection act of Rosobrnadzor's recurrent order to eliminate violations took place on April 27, 2017. The court has adjourned the next session until May 26, 2017.

In recent months, we, as British academicians with a deep knowledge of and admiration for Russian culture and history, have become increasingly concerned by the situation at the European University, St Petersburg. We all know and respect the University's work, which has also been repeatedly recognised by international rankings of universities. In just over 20 years, since it was founded, the EUSP has established a worldwide reputation as a centre of excellence in humanities and social sciences.

EUSP Department of History alumnus (1999) Evgenii Rostovtsev  has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the Institute of History, Saint Petersburg State University, on April 19, 2017. Dissertation title: “Saint Petersburg University in the Context of Russian Social and Political History (1884-1917)”.

Evgenii Vladimirov, second-year student at the EUSP Department of Economics, was admitted with a full scholarship to the MPhil in Economics program at Tinbergen Institute. The Research Master (MPhil) program is a core part of the PhD track at TI.
