Migration and Integration in Europe and Russia: New Challenges and Possibilities

The conference examined new challenges and opportunities faced by contemporary migration systems in Europe and Russia. Changing infrastructure such as modern facilities at border crossing points, the accessibility of visa services, and new and affordable transportation links have all contributed to the fact that borders are becoming more open. As a result, people now consider neighboring or even distant countries as places to live, work, study, or travel more easily. This has contributed to the diversification of trans-border mobility and the types and categories of migrants.

Round table "Law enforcement of the anti-corrupt practices in Great Britain and Russia"

Mr. Clarke presented on the English anti-corruption law Bribery Act and it’s intentions (for nearly a year after its introduction there were no incidents of its application). Discussion participants included London Court of Arbitration judge Sir David Steel, Russian Bar Association member Elena Topilskaya, U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf, entrepreneur Aleksandr Lebedev, leading researcher at the Institute for Issues of Law Enforcement Ella Paneyakh, and others.

Meeting with Leah Rosovsky, Vice-President for Strategy and Programs at Harvard University

At the beginning of the meeting Rosovsky answered several questions regarding the possibility of strategic development at the EUSP. The first was how the EUSP should position itself in comparison with other universities; in particular, how could it remain a competitive, small university near such classical giants as Moscow State University and St. Petersburg University?

EUSP proudly hosted an honoured guest lecture by Andrei Fursenko the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Science Foundation and Aide to the President of the Russian Federation. Mr. Fursenko explained how policy is implemented in the field of education, the present challenges of this process and which advantages these processes bring to the state.

International conference “Italianità as a Cultural Construct: The Russian Perspective”

The Consul General of Italy in St. Petersburg Luigi Estero began the first session with the remark that this conference could be considered one of the last and most carefully prepared events of the year of Italy in Russia. In the course of two days, conference participants examined various aspects of Russian-Italian cultural ties involving the visual arts, architecture, literature, and library science.

Lecture about the development of nation-states in Central Asia by the President of the American University of Central Asia

Before starting his short lecture about the development of nation-states in Central Asia Andrew Wachtel, the President of the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) underlined that he is not an expert of the region and could only share his knowledge and experience by putting the topic into a specific context with reference to similarities and differences between Central Asia and the Balkans.

A Visit by Ulrike Beisiegel, the President of the University of Göttingen

The visit was part of the delegation from Lower Saxony’s official activities in St. Petersburg. The German colleagues met with city administrators, visited leading universities, and in the evening attended a reception at the Astoria Hotel organized by Prime Minister of Lower Saxony Stephan Weil. As part of these events a memorandum on cooperation was signed between the European University at St. Petersburg and the University of Göttingen.
