Academic biography

Oleg Kharkhordin is the founder and director of the EUSP Research Center Res Publica.

He graduated with a BA in political economy from the Leningrad university in 1985, studied in a post-graduate program of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1987-90), then obtained a PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996. He was on a postdoc at the Harvard Academy of International and Area Studies (1996-99), and was a visiting professor at Yale (2002), Harvard (2003) and Sciences Po in Paris (2005, 2006, 2008).

While being a Chair of the EUSP department of political science and sociology (1998-2001), he started and International MA in Russian studies, which hosted many international graduate students, mostly from Northern America and the EU, for semester- and year-long programs. 

During his tenure as Vice-rector for Development EUSP founded a university endowment, a novel form of educational funding for Russia at the time. At the time of its registration, the EUSP endowment was the first endowment to appear in the city of St. Petersburg, and the second one in Russia.

Kharkhordin was elected EUSP Rector in 2009. He was the first Rector in Russia with an internationally recognised PhD degree. He had to step down from this position in 2017. During 2012-2017 he was member of the Presidential Council on Science and Education.

Kharkhordin is an author of many books on political theory, sociology of everyday life and history of concepts.
