St.Petersburg Marathon

On Sunday, 22 September 2013, St.Petersburg was welcoming participants of the 87th race Pushkin-SPb also known as "St.Petersburg Marathon".That is one of the oldest sporting events in the city, and this year EUSP decided to join other institutions in promoting its healthy image.The race was a great success for us, as at we got noticed yet at the registration stage thanks to branded t-shirts provided by the EUSP Administration.

Round table "The Role of Russian Philanthropies in Tackling Global Problems"

EUSP proudly hosted a delegation of the UN Foundation - one of the largest philanthropic institutions in the world, established by CNN founder Ted Turner. The UN Foundation Board members, including such famous figures as Kofi Annan, Muhammad Yunus and Hisashi Owada, came to EUSP to participate at the round table of leaders titled The Role of Russian Philanthropies in Tackling Global Problems.

Diversifying Russia. Presentation of the policy report by Erik Berglöf, EBRD Chief Economist

Russia faces a very specific and difficult challenge – the task of diversifying its economy, ending its heavy reliance on exports of oil, gas and other minerals. The new publication of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development looks in detail at policies that can help to achieve economic diversification. The report argues that sustainable long-term growth in Russia requires economic diversification to reduce the country’s dependence on natural resources. To achieve this, Russia needs to broaden and refocus its diversification strategy.

International conference "Democracy: between the national and the global"

Being a hegemonic doctrine in the world politics, “democracy” does several things at the same time: it legitimizes the status quo of parliamentary republic, allows for imperialist interventions of NATO and US into affairs of periphery countries, and eventually provokes movements for “real” democracy, such as the global wave of protests in 2011-2012. However, as this wave of protests (including the US “Occupy” and the Russian “Fair election” movement) has shown, the grassroots democratic movement increasingly finds its limitation at the level of nation state.

Professor Markus Kaiser studies migration in modern Europe and Asia, as well as various cultural, social, and economic processes in multicultural societies. He is the author of several publications in these and related fields, including the monograph “Eurasia in the Making: Revival of the Silk Road. A Study on Cross-border Trade and Markets in Contemporary Uzbekistan” (Bielefeld University, 1999).
