We would like to congratulate Elena Bogdanova, graduate of the Department of Political Science and Sociology, for her victory in the International Sociological Association’s Sixth Worldwide Competition for Junior Sociologists with the paper “How Utopia Came True: The Baikal-Amur Mainline Construction was the Happiest Time in My Life.”

  Professor of the Political Theory of Democracy and Dean of the Department of Political Science and Sociology Artemy Magun has published a monograph in the series Political Theorgy and Contemporary Philosophy at Bloomsbury Publishing.

  As a part of the EUSP’s 7th annual conference “Exhibition of the Academic Research Achievements,” a mini-conference titled “Civil Society in Russia and the Contemporary World: Social Movements, Institutions, and Moods” took place from November 7th-9th. A number of major researchers from Russia, Europe, and the US presented at the conference.

  A seminar jointly organized by the EUSP and the Regional Public Organization “Council of Rectors of Institutions of Higher Education in Saint Petersburg” took place in the White Hall. As part of the seminar, Russian and American specialists on university endowments presented the results of joint research carried out in recent years by NACUBO and the Common Fund for Endowment in the U.S. Listed below are some of the seminar materials:

  Louise McReynolds is a professor at the University of North Carolina (USA) and now an affiliate researcher with the History Department at the EUSP. Her main research interests are middle class and leisure culture in Russia during the 19th century and pre-revolutionary period.

  The presentation was given by Birgit Hansl, lead economist and coordinator of the World Bank for Economic Policy in Russia, Alvaro Gonzalez, lead economist in the Department of Development for the Private and Financial Sector, and Sergei Ulatov, a senior economist in the Department of Economics and Politics.

The Foundation’s executive director John Ernst (USA) participated in the conference along with Mr. Kenneth S. Kaufman. In his presentation, Mr. Kaufman emphasized the fact that there is a strong intellectual component at the core of all successful alumni associations.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the St. Petersburg Government, heads of Russian companies, professors, and university alumni. They discussed the overall possibilities for long-term cooperation between EUSP and members of the Russian business community.

Igor Shuvalov, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, held an informal discussion with students, graduates and faculty of EUSP

Pierre Rosanvallon is a professor at the Collège de France and one of the leading authorities on European political theory, as well as a specialist in history and the theory of democracy. His research interests include the history of political thought, forms of civilian political participation, realistic analysis of contemporary politics, and the structural difficulties and crises of democratic government. He is also a social critic and public intellectual insistent on the necessity of new institutional forms of democracy and new practices of political participation under the world’s current conditions.

The European University at St. Petersburg Alumni (Europe) also known as EUSPA (Europe) has officially been founded in London in the course of the London EUSP Alumni Weekend.

Dr. Matthew David (the University of Liverpool, UK) delivered a talk within the frameworks of the Inderdisciplinary seminar of the Department of Political science and Sociology

During the conference the Alexander Dallin Prize was awarded. The Alexander Dallin Prize, given for outstanding contribution to research development in the areas of history and society of Russia and the Soviet Union, was awarded to Professor Theodor Shanin. Conference programme (in Russian)
