The Scientific Data journal published an article by the staff of EUSP’s Institute for the Rule of Law titled "Russian Financial Statements Database: A firm-level collection of the universe of financial statements" (the journal is part of the Nature group). The authors of the material are Sergey Bondarkov, Viktor Ledenev and Dmitry Skugarevsky.

The Institute for the Rule of Law (IPL) at the European University at St. Petersburg has created the Russian Accounting Statements Database (RBBD).

The scientific journal "Applied Econometrics" has published an article by employees of the Institute for Law Enforcement Problems: Leonid Zhizhin, Alexei Knorre, Ruslan Kuchakov and Dmitry Skogarevsky. The work is called "What Crime Costs Russian Society: Measurement Using a Compensating Change in Income ". 

Before each new year, we talk about the state of regulation in Russia. For the country and the world 2022 was a year of hardship and tragedy. Therefore, even in such a bureaucratic area as control and supervision, there were major changes. 

Dmitry Serebrennikov and Dmitry Skogarevsky (both from EUSP’s Institute for the Rule of Law) have published a preprint of their article "A tale of four cities: Exploring environmental characteristics of CCTV equipment placement".

Researchers at EUSP’s Institute for the Rule of Law have published an analytical review "Arbitration Disputes by Types of Economic Activities of the Parties Involved".

The Institute for the Rule of Law (IRL) at the European University at St. Petersburg, based on data from more than 550,000 scheduled and unscheduled inspections, identified and assessed the main trends  in the activities of regulatory authorities this year.

Interestingly, the sphere of law and jurisprudence has been rather skeptical of the digital revolution. The tools of informatics seem to be highly suited to dealing with issues that arise in the course of legal affairs: The legal system consists of and is confronted with large bodies of complex textual data that follow rational and objective principles. Informatics is a science that promises to help solve this problem as it has brought about new insights on how to effectively organize und use complex data.

Winners of the Second All-Russian Contest "Open Data in the Russian Federation"  

The "Russian Drug Map" developed by the IRL is recognized as the best research project using open data at the Second All-Russian contest "Open Data in the Russian Federation".

Mr. Clarke presented on the English anti-corruption law Bribery Act and it’s intentions (for nearly a year after its introduction there were no incidents of its application). Discussion participants included London Court of Arbitration judge Sir David Steel, Russian Bar Association member Elena Topilskaya, U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf, entrepreneur Aleksandr Lebedev, leading researcher at the Institute for Issues of Law Enforcement Ella Paneyakh, and others.

As part of the seminar David Nelkin presented a paper. David Nelkin is Distinguished Professor of Legal Institutions and Social Change at the University of Macerata (Italy), and Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of  Cardiff (Great Britain). 

The Institute for the Rule of Law in EUSP held the international conference devoted to the discussion on the current situation with law and law enforcement practices At the opening of the conference EUSP proudly hosted the lectureby the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation Valery Zorkin Conference programme (pdf 61KB)

At the opening of the international conference "Law and Law Enforcement in Russia: Interdisciplinary Research", EUSP proudly hosted the lecture by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation Valery Zorkin. In his speech, Mr. Zorkin elaborated on his vision of "the paths of Russia toward law". He touched upon the current situation with law enforcement practices and expressed his opinion on the issue of judicial precedent and its significance in Russia.
