Social Science and Russian Studies: Value Added or Obfuscated?

In Russian/Soviet studies in the West, historians and literature scholars have played central roles. Social scientists, mostly in political science, stepped into the ring after World War II, often pursuing modernization and totalitarian theories whose insights ultimately were overshadowed by errors of logic and fact. Political scientists have returned with useful insights on political economy, voting, and policy-making. But what about sociology-what has it offered in the past, and what can it offer in the future?

On September 7, 2019, Katri Kulmuni (IMARES 2011-12) was elected Party Leader of the Centre Party (Suomen Keskusta). Since 6 June 2019 to present, Katri is Minister of Economic Affairs, Finland. She is the youngest Minister in the Antti Rinne's cabinet. Katri is also a Member of the Finnish Parliament acting on behalf of the Electoral District of Lapland.

Venue: FREEDOM Space (7, Kazanskaya street, 2nd floor) The first open lecture of the IMARES Month of Global Affairs by Prof. Ivan Kurilla will be on Russian-US relations. "Russian mountains" of the recent U.S. politics and Russian preoccupation with the American example and the U.S. threat will be better understood within the historical context of bilateral relations, mutual perceptions, and inventions of the Other. The lecture will expose those long trends of US-Russian relations.

MARIA TROFIMOVA SPEAKS ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN EUROPE

On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, Dean of EUSP International Programs Maria Trofimova presented her views on the topic of Academic Freedom in Europe at EAIE conference in Geneva. She discussed an important distinction between academic freedom and institutional autonomy, threats to academic freedom from outside and from within academia, and importance of international academic solidarity.

Tuesday, April 5, 17:30, EUSP Golden Hall, Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Affairs, will deliver a public lecture. Russian foreign policy is closely connected both to domestic political needs and dynamics of external situation. Both those factors are now rapidly developing. Domestic consolidation is solid, but lacks long-term vision, while international trends are out of anybody's control. Next couple of years will be decisive both in terms of global power constellation and in the context of Russian external vectors.
