On 24 June the European University at St Petersburg organized a roundtable on the blindspots of decarbonization debates, featuring some of Russia's leading climate scientists: Vladimir Kattcov, Oleg Anisimov, Natalia Lukina, Sergey Kirpotin, Irina Kurganova. The roundtable was moderated by Oleg Kharkhording (EUSP).
The goal of the roundtable was to explore the issues that the current debates on decarbonization systematically fail to address. Expert commentaries on the European Green Deal and transborder carbon tax on the Russian exports, e.g. those coming from the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, usually focus on renewable energy and carbon sequestration as the two main options in the climate policy mix. The roundtable participants have shown that other options are available to adapt to and mitigate, the ongoing climate change — not only in terms of the specific policy instruments but also in the way policy-makers conceptualize and reason about climate change.
