Given the current decarbonization efforts throughout the world and the advance of green technologies, a declining demand for fossil fuels is expected. Russia is in a precarious position as its oil reserves are increasingly hard to recover, geology-wise, and oil production costs tend to make it non-competitive. As to Russian natural gas, it can survive much longer as a transition fuel for the new energy, but in the final run its role – and market niches – will diminish too. What can Russia do to remain a strong player on the global energy market?
