From the 14th Century to the Beginning of the 16th Century This book is devoted to the socio-political development of Pskov before its annexation in 1510 by the Muscovy. The book challenges the ideas that are widespread in previous historiography about Pskov repeating the socio-political system of Novgorod. Despite certain similarities, Pskov’s circumstances were rather different, and the cities developed along different paths. Using the example of Pskov, the author raises the question of the uniqueness of the socio-political structure of the Russian medieval city, comparing the development of Pskov in the 14th and 15th centuries and the communes of Western and Central Europe at the end of the 11th and 12th centuries. This approach allows us to take a fresh look at the long-standing question in historiography about the comparability of the Russian and European Middle Ages.
