The Potanin Foundation has concluded the fourth cycle of the Professional Development Competition. CIANO's application for the training project titled "Scientometrics for Scholars: A Systematic Review from Scratch" was included in the list of supported projects. A total of 273 applications were submitted for the competition, of which 37 were selected in the Institutional Experience category.
The CIANO training project is aimed at providing representatives of different disciplines with the opportunity to learn from each other's experience and jointly understand the stages of preparing complex publications. This involves a review of contemporary scholarly literature based on a formalized analysis of large arrays of publications.
Scientometric data is a tool that is suitable not only for monitoring the citation of scholarly publications and assessing the performance of scholars, but also helps scholars themselves to work with huge amounts of research information.
Against the background of the development of generative language models, the use of which in writing scientific texts requires practical solutions, it is important to keep up with modern methods of working with scientific information. As the CIANO research shows, systematic reviews are rarely used in the works of Russian scholars in the social sciences and humanities, nor are special tools for analyzing publications (for example, VosViewer) widely employed. The training developed by the Center will be aimed at filling this gap.
- How will the training take place?
First, participants will get acquainted with scientometric tools and the features of their use for a systematic review. Then they will have a series of webinars, and at the end of the final expert session, teachers and researchers will receive a guide. This guide will help them prepare high-quality reviews of current trends in their own fields. It is expected that in the future they will publish articles in reputable publications.
- About other projects of the Center
Other significant Center projects include work dedicated to the ranking of research centers in the field of Russian Studies. Based on its results, the Global Ranking of Expert Knowledge about Russia was formed, which included universities and research institutes from all over the world. The largest concentration of research on Russia is found the United States (Harvard and Columbia University from the Ivy League, as well as Stanford), Russia (European University at St. Petersburg, Higher School of Economics, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University) and the UK (Oxford). You can read the rest of the conclusions here.
Earlier, CIANO also made the data on the Monitoring of the Effectiveness of Universities available for wide use. With the help of a dashboard created by researchers at the European University, it is possible, for example, to track the dynamics of the average USE (Unified State Exam) score in all universities — public, private, national research universities, and head and branch universities — in all Russian regions over the past nine years. By selecting the appropriate search parameters, data can be obtained on the number of winners of academic Olympiads, the share of postgraduate students, the citation index, and the presence of junior scholars and pedagogical workers.
More information about these and other studies is available on the CIANO website in the "Research" section.
