The recent changes in the research funding field around the world has led many universities to increase their investments in the management of the research process. The number and variety of research support structures has increased and research administration has become the key mechanism for delivering research goals. Research administrators and managers are now very much sought after in higher education institutions across different countries. So what do exactly these people do?

The topics to be discussed:
- The mission of the research administration offices (RAO) in US universities in general and in primary undergraduate universities in particular
- Organization of the RAO – what are pre-award and post-award departments?
- Tasks of the typical RAO inside university (like assistance with the identification of funding opportunities and the development of proposals; preparation of budgets; submission of proposals, development of subcontracts; review and negotiation of all contracts and agreements (including material transfer and non-disclosure agreements); compliance with various federal and state research rules and regulations; management of research partnerships with corporate sponsors)
