EUSP WAS ACQUITTED OF ALL CHARGES IN THE COURT

Dear friends,Today the Magistrate's Court of St Petersburg held the hearings of the EUSP case where the Ministry of Education and Science (represented by “Rosobrnadzor”) acted as plaintiff and the EUSP as defendant. The hearings lasted 30 minutes: the EUSP was acquitted of all charges “due to the expiration of the statute of limitations period.”

DMITRY KOZLOV – CANDIDATE OF SCIENCES IN ART HISTORY

On April 6th, EUSP Department of Art History graduate Dmitry Kozlov defended his dissertation “Stadion v arkhitekture XX veka (na primere tvorchestva A. S. Nikol’skogo) [The Stadium in Architecture of the 20th Century (The Works of A. S. Nikolsky)]” in the Dissertation Council at the Russian Institute of Art History. We congratulate Dmitry and wish him greater academic success!

On April 18th, EUSP Department of Anthropology graduate Maria Pirogovskaia defended her dissertation “Ol’faktornyi kod i vospitanie chuvstvitel’nosti v russkoi gorodskoi kul’ture 1860-1910-x godov [The Olfactory Code and the Cultivation of Sensibility in Russian Urban Culture in the 1860s-1910s]” in the Dissertation Council of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences “Kunstkamera.”

The New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater, the European University at St. Petersburg, and the Center of Contemporary Culture in Barcelona will describe the European experience of the transformation of urban spaces. From April 28th through May 29th 2016, the exhibition “Polis: 7 Lessons from the European Prize for Urban Public Space” will be open at the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater as part of the “Ideal City” program.

Nina Poussenkova is the Senior Research Fellow, Institute of World Economy and International Relations, (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences and the chair of the Carnegie Moscow Center's Economics and Energy Policy Program. Her research focus is on National Oil Companies, with particular attention paid to Rosneft. She will seek to dispel myths about how national oil companies function and seek to give a more realistic picture about the decision making structures of national oil companies. We would like to congratulate Vera Berezina, a Department of History graduate, on the successful defense of her dissertation “Ekskursionnaia rabota v 1920-x g. (na materialakh Petrograda-Leningrada) [Sightseeing Work in the 1920s (On Petrograd-Leningrad Materials)]”. The meeting of the Dissertation Council of the St. Petersburg Institute of History, Russian Academy of Sciences, took place on March 29th, 2016.

RUSSIAN FOREIGN POLICY: MORE CHANGE TO COME?

Tuesday, April 5, 17:30, EUSP Golden Hall, Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Affairs, will deliver a public lecture. Russian foreign policy is closely connected both to domestic political needs and dynamics of external situation. Both those factors are now rapidly developing. Domestic consolidation is solid, but lacks long-term vision, while international trends are out of anybody's control. Next couple of years will be decisive both in terms of global power constellation and in the context of Russian external vectors.

AFTER THE STORM: The World Economy and Britain's Economic Future

On Friday, April 15, Sir Vince Cable, former Liberal Democrat MP and Business Secretary under the Coalition Government (2010-2015) delivered an honorary lecture in the Golden Hall of the European University at St. Petersburg. Sitting next to Russia’s former finance minister (2000 – 2011) and member of EUSP Board of Trustees Alexei Kudrin, Sir Cable chose the title “minister of economics” to describe better his former position in the British Government while speaking to an audience in Russia.
