EUSP History Department graduate Evgenii Grishin defended his PhD dissertation at University of Kansas on July 14, 2017. The dissertation written under Professor Eve Levin’s academic supervision was titled “The Concepts of the “Schism” and “Schismatic” in the Church and State Discourses of Seventeenth and Eighteenth-century Russia”. We congratulate Evgenii on his successful defense and PhD in History degree.

MARGARITA ZAVADSKAYA – PHD IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

EUSP Political Science and Sociology Department graduate and research fellow Margarita Zavadskaya defended her PhD dissertation at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence on September 15, 2017. The dissertation was titled: "When Elections Subvert Authoritarianism Failed Cooptation and Russian Post-Electoral Protests of 2011-12". EUSP History Department graduate Kseniia Barabanova defended her dissertation “Epidemiia kholery v Sankt-Peterburge v 1831 g.: vlast' i gorozhane v usloviiakh chrezvychainoi situatsii [Cholera Epidemic in Saint Petersburg in 1831: Power and Citizens in a State of Emergency]” at the Saint Petersburg Institute of History of Russian Academy of Sciences on October 3, 2017.

On September 18, 2017 EUSP Rector Nikolai Vakhtin met St. Petersburg's Vice-Governor and Chairman of the Committee for Property Relations Mikhail Mokretsov, who was commissioned to supervise the relocation of the University. Accommodation options were discussed during the meeting. The EUSP delegation was asked to prepare a document with characteristics and specifications of the potential options required to host the University (a new building or land for construction).

European University at St. Petersburg held an opening ceremony of a new “scientific” year on September 4, 2017, although, unlike other educational institutions, the university is temporarily unable to start the “academic” year. EUSP Rector Nikolai Vakhtin, Provost Veljko Vujačić and the first Rector Boris Firsov greeted the recent students, graduates, faculty and employees of the university and delivered speeches which were received with sadness at times, but also with enthusiasm by all those present.

On August 2, 2017, the European University at St. Petersburg applied to the Federal Service for Supervision of Education and Science (Rosobrnadzor) for a new educational license. The appeal was made possible thanks to the timely fulfillment of the request to cancel the previous license by Rosobrnadzor (Order of the Federal Service for Supervision of Education and Science on the termination of the educational activities, dated July 31, 2017, No. 1530-06).

VIKTOR PANEYAKH DIED ON JULY 19, 2017

It is with regret that we announce the death of Viktor Moiseevich Paneyakh, Doctor of Science in History, Professor of the European University at St. Petersburg, and Chief Researcher at Saint Petersburg Institute of History of Russian Academy of Sciences. Professor Paneyakh was the founding dean of the EUSP History Department. The first teaching program developed under his guidance laid the grounds of the department’s subsequent development. Our deepest condolences to Viktor Paneyakh’s family and to his loved ones, his colleagues, his students, and to those who knew him.

COURT HEARING NEWS, July 13, 2017

The 9th Arbitration Court of Appeal in Moscow has recognized the legality of issuing a recurrent order by Rosobrnadzor with respect to disputed violations contested by the University. The educational license of European University at St. Petersburg will be suspended after the official publication of the court decision. There seems to be no point in further appeals. European University will work on obtaining a new license without waiting for the court's decision on the final annulment of the existing license.

Interestingly, the sphere of law and jurisprudence has been rather skeptical of the digital revolution. The tools of informatics seem to be highly suited to dealing with issues that arise in the course of legal affairs: The legal system consists of and is confronted with large bodies of complex textual data that follow rational and objective principles. CONSERVATION ISSUES IN WATER TOWNS: THE CASE OF VENICE

Water towns have a great potential due to the presence of water, this makes them also more fragile, demanding higher level of attention and sensibility for their protection. Venice, despite the high level of protection by the legislative framework, struggles for the conservation of its soul and image. The climate changes, the growing pressure of the tourism and sometimes the incapacity of controlling or managing the urban transformations risk to weaken its conservation. The lecture will provide an overview on the main issues for the conservation of the town.
