The debate took place as part of “Europe Day in St. Petersburg”, with participants including the President of the European University Institute in Florence, Josep Borrell, Professor Paul Scheffer from the University of Amsterdam, Professor Stanislav Tkachenko from the St. Petersburg State University and EUSP’s Professor Maria Nozhenko. Chairing the debate was Rector of EUSP, Oleg Kharkhordin.

2011/2012 Commencement Ceremony

The evening began with the annual address by the Rector of the University, Oleg Kharkhordin and the deans of the faculties. Among the guests in attendance at the ceremony were members of the Board of Trustees, friends, and partners of the European University. At the end of the ceremony the graduates were awarded Master’s degrees. The evening, as per tradition, concluded with refreshments and picture-taking.

2010/2011 Commencement Ceremony

A 15th anniversary festive ceremony celebrating the end of the 2010–2011 academic year and the awarding of diplomas to graduates of the Master's program was held in the Conference Hall of EUSP. Parting wishes to the graduates were expressed by  Vice-Rector for International Affairs Vadim Volkov and a graduate of the Department of Political science and Sociology in 2000 Oleg Pachenkov who is now working as a Deputy director of the Centre for Independent Social Research.

The Seventh Meeting of Friends and Trustees of the EUSP Endowment Fund

Member of the Board of Trustees, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation Alexei Kudrin and Director of the State Hermitage Museum Mikhail Piotrovsky told the guests about the history of the University and about the newly ratified Strategy, which is intended on making EUSP the NUMBER ONE University in the areas of social sciences and humanities in Russia; it will also ensure EUSP’s entrance into the international academic market. Rector Oleg Kharkhordin recounted to those in attendance about the main achievements of the University during the past year.

Lecture by Margaret Samu (Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City)"Naked Female Body in Russia: the Art Market and Criticism of the XIX Centur"

Margaret Samu is a postdoctoral fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. She specializes in nineteenth-century art and visual culture in the United States, France, and Russia. Her work deals with issues of assimilation and resistance to the western European artistic tradition in cultures distant from European artistic centers. During the 2010-11 academic year, she is developing parts of her dissertation into a publishable manuscript and researching the 20th-century Russian art collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Meeting of EUSP Students and Faculty with the Governor of St. Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko

The meeting of EUSP students, alumni and faculty with Governor of St. Petersburg Valentina Matvienko took place on Thursday, May 19th in the Conference Hall of EUSP. The city’s chief administrator noted the high achievements of EUSP in Russian and international academic circles.  In particular, the fact that, according to the London School of Economics rating, EU is the only Russian university among the hundred best European research and educational facilities in the area of political science.

Lecture by Gary Schwartz (USA/The Netherlands) "People of the East in the Works of Rembrandt"

Gary Schwartz is an American art historian who lives and works in the Netherlands, and is an eminent expert in Dutch art, and is one of the leading experts on the works of Rembrandt. He has contributed a great deal to the determination of authenticity to many of Rembrandt’s works in museums around the world. He has been the Director of International Council For Curators of Dutch and Flemish Art (CODART) since 1998. His research, publications, translations of archival documents, and searches in museum storerooms have brought him worldwide authority.
