Alexei Larionov works for the State Hermitage Museum (since 1984) and is currently Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Western European art and Curator of Pre-Eighteenth Century Dutch, Flemish and German Artworks. His main interests are Dutch art of the 15th-16th centuries, the artwork of Rubens and the history of collections of paintings by Old Masters in Russia.

Professor Graham is a leading academician of Russian and Soviet science who, for many years, has been involved in research in the area of the history of science (STS approach). He is the author of Science in Russia and the Soviet Union (1993), The Ghost of the Executed Engineer: Technology and the Fall of the Soviet Union (1993), What We Have Learned About Science and Technology from the Russian Experience (1998),  Naming Infinity: A True Story of Religious Mysticism and Mathematical Creativity (with Jean-Michel Kantor) (2009).

More than thirty organizations from the north-west region were represented, all of which, together with partners in the EU, are involved in the management of projects. The exhibition was accompanied by a presentation of a program supporting EU-Russian cooperation, the distribution of a catalogue of exhibitors and a round table discussion dedicated to the problems and perspectives for collaboration between Russia and the EU in the region.  Exhibition program (pdf 82KB).

The lecture concentrated on the use of Eurobonds as an instrument in the creation of an investment portfolio with low volatility.  Questions to be touched upon include the basic criteria of bonds and Eurobonds, the question of market size, ratings, the behavior of bonds in a time of crisis and examples of successful trading ideas, etc.

This talk revisited main patterns of capital flows over the last 150 years, as well approaches to their stabilisation attempted at different time periods.

More than half a century has passed since a group of sociologists and anthropologists announced the creation of a new language for describing the social structure, in which “groups”, characterized by certain attributes, superseded communications between individuals and organizations. The development of mathematical theories of networks supplemented this language with a formal method for analyzing empirical information, presenting alternatives to traditional statistics.

As part of the seminar David Nelkin presented a paper. David Nelkin is Distinguished Professor of Legal Institutions and Social Change at the University of Macerata (Italy), and Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of  Cardiff (Great Britain).

Together with the International Association for the Humanities, EUSP held an international conference. In the course of several round table discussions scientists and representatives of the foundations, supporting research projects within the sphere of the humanities, discussed questions regarding society’s demands for knowledge of humanities, the interaction between scientist and society, state, foundations and, also, the relationship within a community, its self-organization and internationalization.

The discussion took place within the framework of the international exhibition “Towards the Other”, organized by the Netherlands Institute in St. Petersburg, together with the Creative Association of Curators SPb. 

Sergei Vasiliev was Director of the Working Center for Economic Reform of the Government of the Russian Federation from 1991, Deputy Minister for Economics from 1994-1997 and Deputy Director for the Government Apparatus from 1997-1998. 

Alexander Lebedev is President of the National Reserve Bank and owner of New Media holding (newspaper Novaya Gazeta) and British newspapers “The Evening Standard” and “The Independent”. He is President of the National Investment Council, the International Institute of Global Development and the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Centre for Problems of Integration at the Institute of Economics.  Alexander Lebedev graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. He defended his Ph.D. dissertation “The problems of foreign debt and the challenges of globalization”.

Mr. Drebentsov joined BP in February 2006 to take responsibility for economic and energy research and policy advice for the BP Group in countries of the former Soviet Union. Additional responsibilities include coverage of European gas markets for BP Group Economics and global gas reserves and trade for the annual Statistical Review of World Energy. In 2010, Mr. Drebentsov assumed the additional role of Vice-President for External Affairs of BP Russia.  Since November 2008, he has been serving on the Expert Council of the Government of Russia’s Anti-Crisis Commission.  

At the centre of the authors’ attention are fundamentally academic questions about abstract concepts: the evolution of the use of the term “society”, the conceptualization of society in Russia, from Ancient Rus to Modernity, the specifics of the theory of “society” in the works of the Russian Enlightenment.  Such a collection is able to perplex even the most versed of readers.  However, the results of each of these research areas answers questions very real and relevant to each of us in its relationship to everyday questions: Why is there no formation in Russia of a mass or effective civil
