It is with regret that we announce the death of Viktor Moiseevich Paneyakh, Doctor of Science in History, Professor of the European University at St. Petersburg, and Chief Researcher at Saint Petersburg Institute of History of Russian Academy of Sciences. Professor Paneyakh was the founding dean of the EUSP History Department. The first teaching program developed under his guidance laid the grounds of the department’s subsequent development. Our deepest condolences to Viktor Paneyakh’s family and to his loved ones, his colleagues, his students, and to those who knew him.

The 9th Arbitration Court of Appeal in Moscow has recognized the legality of issuing a recurrent order by Rosobrnadzor with respect to disputed violations contested by the University. The educational license of European University at St. Petersburg will be suspended after the official publication of the court decision. There seems to be no point in further appeals. European University will work on obtaining a new license without waiting for the court's decision on the final annulment of the existing license.

Interestingly, the sphere of law and jurisprudence has been rather skeptical of the digital revolution. The tools of informatics seem to be highly suited to dealing with issues that arise in the course of legal affairs: The legal system consists of and is confronted with large bodies of complex textual data that follow rational and objective principles. Informatics is a science that promises to help solve this problem as it has brought about new insights on how to effectively organize und use complex data.

Olga Novikova, our Senior Administrator and EUSP International Programs Admissions Officer, has received a PhD degree in Philosophy from St.Petersburg State University. Our best congratulations to a unique expert of moral aspects in the field of philosophy of cognitive science. We hope it is not the finish point of her research work.

Our alumnus from the Department of Political Science and Sociology, Kirill Kalinin, successfully defended his thesis "The Essays on Election Fraud in Authoritarian Regimes".

Water towns have a great potential due to the presence of water, this makes them also more fragile, demanding higher level of attention and sensibility for their protection. Venice, despite the high level of protection by the legislative framework, struggles for the conservation of its soul and image. The climate changes, the growing pressure of the tourism and sometimes the incapacity of controlling or managing the urban transformations risk to weaken its conservation. The lecture will provide an overview on the main issues for the conservation of the town.

The recipients of the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art were announced on June 7, 2017.

EUSP Vice-Rector for Development Alexander Kurylev attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum – 2017 as a front row participant of the panel session titled “Creative Industries Driving Exports and Enhancing a Country’s Image Abroad”. Alexander introduced the results of the interdisciplinary research project “Hermitage for the City and its Citizens” conducted at EUSP on the 250th anniversary of the Hermitage museum. The project aimed to evaluate the influence of the Hermitage on economics in St.

EUSP Economics Department graduate Aleksei Minabutdinov has successfully defended his dissertation at Steklov Mathematical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences on May 15, 2017. The dissertation was titled: "Limiting curves for a class of self-similar adic systems". We congratulate Aleksei on being awarded the degree of Candidate of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics.

Cambridge University Library chose three titles from EUSP publications as Items of the Month (March, 2017) in its Slavonic Collections. It is, of course, very pleasant to hear words of appraisal from librarians with a 600-year-old history. "... books produced by EUSP's excellent publishing arm ..." "...For the librarian, their izdatel'stvo (publishing house) is a great boon ... important acquisitions ... particularly valuable ... "

On May 25, 2017, a general meeting to elect a new director took place at the Institute for Linguistic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences (ILS RAS). Evgenii Golovko, EUSP Anthropology Department Professor, Doctor of Science in Philology, Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, and Head of the Department of the National Languages of Russia at ILS RAS, was elected.

EUSP History Department alumna Elena Kochetkova (2013) successfully defended her PhD dissertation at University of Helsinki on May 27, 2017. The dissertation was titled “The Soviet Forestry Industry in the 1950s and 1960s : A Project of Modernization and Technology Transfer from Finland”. We congratulate Elena and EUSP History Department on their success!

Wider European Doctorate (WED) program graduate Oleksandr Polianichev defended his PhD dissertation at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence on May 26, 2017. WED is a joint PhD program on history and political sciences organized in partnership between EUI and EUSP. The dissertation was titled “Rediscovering Zaporozhians: Memory, Loyalties, and Politics in Late Imperial Kuban, 1880–1914.”

The hearing on the EUSP lawsuit challenging the inspection act of Rosobrnadzor's recurrent order to eliminate violations took place today at the Moscow Arbitration Court. The court has adjourned the next session until July 25, 2017.
