For some time sociologists criticize that the social science disciplines are bound to the nation state much closer than necessary or desirable. Under the heading of ‘methodological nationalism’ this criticism became kind of a call to arms to overcome parochialism and encourage cosmopolitanism. In an four-year EU funded research project an international colloborative team investigated the development of nine of the the social sciences and humanities (SSH) disciplines in eight European nations and the talk will present some of the findings with regard to the institutionalization of these disciplines since roughly 1950.
