The School has been established to harness the new opportunities offered by big data analysis and artificial intelligence for the social sciences and the humanities. It brings together fully updated programs in economics, finance, sociology, digital humanities, data analysis, and artificial intelligence. The School also includes an applied Center for Machine Learning, Data Analysis, and Statistics.
Traditional disciplines in the social sciences and humanities remain relevant because they address the meaning of human life. Yet today they struggle to keep pace with technological change. The mission of the School is to train sociologists, economists, philologists, art historians, and other humanities scholars to work with new computational technologies to formulate and solve problems in their respective fields, through Master’s and professional programs as well as project-based work.
“Breakthroughs in AI have fueled a wave of tech optimism in the computing world. But social structures, economic behavior, natural language, world views, ethics, and aesthetics haven’t gone anywhere—these are fundamental contexts for the use of any new tools. The social sciences and humanities will continue to face serious questions. It's better to answer them using computational technologies than without them. This new School will integrate computational and humanistic methods in practice,” says Vadim Volkov, Rector of the European University.
The School’s supporting partners include Yandex and Lamoda. They share expertise and help refine the formulation of problems and identify the needs of the high-tech industry, which the School’s graduates will be prepared to enter.
“Our industry partners need specialists who know how to give data meaning. It’s not enough to analyze big data—you also have to ask the right questions and make sense of the results. It turns out that to do this, computer science needs sociologists and economists, and in turn, they need specialists in artificial intelligence,” adds Evgeny Kotelnikov, Director of the new School.
On April 18, we invite you to the School’s presentation and an open discussion with scholars, developers, and business representatives on the topic “Education and Responsibility in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” The event will be held at “The Community” in New Holland. Registration via link.
