Краткое описание доклада:
This paper focuses on different framings of family membership, as well as lived experiences under these framings for older Russian-speaking migrant women, who are attending a voluntary organised meeting place in the capital area of Finland. The women have migrated in later life, most have family in Finland, and are settled there on a permanent basis. The meeting place where the data were collected had become a central venue in their everyday lives to spend time, attend hobbies and receive assistance in Russian language. I suggest that in the meeting place, various stakeholders frame the family membership and family support of the attendees in limited and ambiguous ways. The findings suggest that there persist assumptions of stronger family support networks for the heterogeneous category of ‘Russian-speakers’ in Finland, and that the older migrants are discussed in more terms of receivers of support, whereas they also contribute greatly to their families, a point of view lacking from reasoning in their needs for attending recreational activities. The paper draws from qualitative data: interviews (N=27) with the attendees and organisers of the meeting place, participant observations in the meeting place over the course of one year (2018–2019, approx. 150 hours) and documents produced by the meeting place.
