Description of the Course

The first part of the course introduces the basic obstacles and difficulties encountered in the theory of collective choice both from a historical and present perspective. Specifically, we will discuss the famous Condorcet paradox and the so-called doctrinal paradox that has led to the recent advancement of the theory of judgement aggregation. The fundamental results of Arrow and Gibbard-Satterthwaite will be presented and their relevance to democratic decision-making will be discussed. The second part presents possible solutions such as the median voter theorem and their application in models of political economy. Finally, we will study models of participation in democratic decision procedures and elections.
