Department of Sociology

In Russian

We teach Sociology as a profession and help you understand whether it is your true calling.

We believe Sociology is an applied science. It entails not only in-depth academic research in dialogue with other scientists but also a reaction to the current events. To speak out on issues that concern our society here and now, in an unbiased manner and on the basis of empirical data, is in our view the true task of contemporary Sociology.

Leading professors of our department combine world-class academic research with development of research projects devoted to the most pressing issues of current social agenda. Our texts are published in major print and electronic media.

The programs of our department are designed in such a way that courses in Social Theory, Methodology, along with elective disciplines, help students pursue a research project of their dreams. From studying social inequality from the feminist perspective to analyzing complaints submitted to government authorities by means of machine learning methods, we welcome diverse research interests. Professionalism is our main requirement!

After joining our department you become a part of the team. Our professors, researchers and students together work on the most complicated research topics.

  • The case against Ivan Golunov forces us to think of police planting drugs — we reply with statistical data.
  • Russian scientists and university rectors are suspected of plagiarism — we conduct a large-scale study of how wide-spread plagiarism is in the Russian science.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic proves to be an unprecedented challenge for the Russian healthcare system. In order to examine this issue we conduct interviews with doctors and participant observation in hospitals.
