Department of Political Science

In Russian

The faculty members occupy leading positions among Russian specialists in social sciences in international citation databases. Largely due to the contribution of our faculty, EUSP was listed among Europe's leading scientific institutions in political sciences in 2004 and became one of three Russian universities included in the QS subject ranking in sociology in 2018.

Articles and monographs written by our faculty members have being been published at the world’s major journals in Political Science. Some of these publications have won prestigious international awards, including the Lawrence D. Longley Award from the American Political Science Association for the best article on political representation and electoral systems.

Research interests of our faculty include the development of political institutions, parties and party systems, elections and electoral systems, democratization, as well as international relations (with special emphasis on Russian-American relations) and subject fields of the affiliated research centers Res Publica Center and ENERPO Center. The Political Science Department develops active cooperation with the European University Institute (Florence), Aleksanteri Institute (Helsinki) and others.

Both Master and Doctoral (aspirantura) Programs in Political Science aim to involve graduate students into joint research work starting from the first semester at the University. Most of the classes are held in Russian with an exception of a few courses in English from the International programs curriculum which are also available for PolSci students.

GONE WITH THE WIND

The American South has always been different – slavery, secession, poverty, rural, and segregated – seemingly the reverse of American ideals. As novelist William Faulkner noted, in the South, the past is not even past, as the recent conflict over Confederate monuments attests. Why is this so? How have other regions in the U.S. contributed to the Southern mixture of myth and history? And what does its persistence say about the nation?
