The EUSP Department of Political Science was established in July, 2018 when the Department of Political Science and Sociology split into two parts. Thus, we became the youngest department of the university, but all our achievements remained with us. Our faculty members occupy leading positions among Russian specialists in social sciences in international citation databases. Largely due to the contribution of our faculty, EUSP was listed among Europe's leading scientific institutions in political sciences in 2004 and became one of three Russian universities included in the QS subject ranking in sociology in 2018.
We are widely recognized by the international scholarly community. Top academic publishers and the world’s major journals in Political Science publish articles and monographs written by our faculty members. Some of these works have won prestigious international awards, including the Lawrence D. Longley Award from the American Political Science Association for the best article on political representation and electoral systems.
Research interests of our faculty include the development of political institutions, parties and party systems, elections and electoral systems, democratization, as well as international relations (with special emphasis on Russian-American relations) and subject fields of the affiliated research centers. Res Publica Center headed by professor Oleg Kharhordin deals with problems of political theory, ENERPO Center headed by professor Nikita Lomagin conducts research in energy policy.
Faculty members — Vladimir Gelman, Grigorii Golosov, Margarita Zavadskaya, Mikhail Turchenko, Ivan Kurilla, and Nikita Lomagin are well known beyond the academic community. They largely contribute to the popularization of modern political knowledge in Russia by giving regular commentaries, expert opinions and interviews in mass media.
The Political Science Department offers Master Program and Doctoral Program (aspirantura) in Political Science. Both of them aim to involve graduate students into joint research work starting from the first semester at the University. Most of the classes are held in Russian with an exception of a few courses in English from the International programs curriculum which are also available for PolSci students. Both programs have state accreditation. Russian academic and research institutions, European and American Universities recognize the EUSP diplomas. Our alumni make great careers in academia and outside of it. Their competencies are in high demand on a wide range of labor markets from public administration to business.
The Political Science Department develops active cooperation with the European University Institute (Florence), Aleksanteri Institute (Helsinki), King’s College (London) and others. We regularly host invited scholars who give lectures and teach courses. Our students take international internships and receive financial assistance from the EUSP to conduct their field studies.
