EUSP Political Science and Sociology Department graduate Ivan Grigoriev defended his dissertation "Transformatsiia institutov sudebnoi vlasti v protsesse konsolidatsii gibridnogo politicheskogo rezhima (na primere Konstitutsionnogo suda Rossiiskoi Federatsii) [Transformation of Judiciary Institutions in the Process of Consolidating a Hybrid Political Regime (on the Example of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation)]" at the National Research University Higher School of Economics on December 19, 2017.

ARTEMY MAGUN: Welcome to the European University at Saint-Petersburg. In case you haven’t been here recently, we are very happy to see you again. Today is Jean-Luc Nancy Day, which will consist of two parts: a lecture titled «God Without Confession and Profession»; and a round table discussion concerning “Gods of Material Society”.

From May 12th until May 15th, the European University at St. Petersburg hold a series of lectures titled “Central Asia in Focus,” organized jointly by the TAIF Professorship in the History of the Muslim Peoples of Russia and the BP Professorship in Migration Studies.

On March 26th, Michael Burawoy visited EUSP. He is a professor of sociology at UC Berkeley and served as president of the International Sociological Association (2010-2014). His lecture was held with support from UBS Professorship.

On March 13th, the European University hosted an open forum devoted to the topic of migration and urban development, with support from the Consulate General of the Netherlands in St. Petersburg and the Netherlands Institute in St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg and Amsterdam were given special attention as “open” cities, whose populations have a high proportion of migrants.  

On December 17th, prominent American historian Ronald Suny gave a presentation.

Architect Michael Arad gave a lecture on the creation of the memorial to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York. Arad was the memorial’s designer and gave a lecture at EUSP as part of the Department of Art History’s Open Research Seminar, with support from the United States Consulate General in St. Petersburg. Arad began with his own story of the project’s creation, starting with his personal impressions of the tragic day observed from the roof of his own home, and ending with the opening ceremony of the memorial on the tenth anniversary of the attack.

Frank Ruda (Free University of Berlin) gave a lecture as part of the Department of Political Science and Sociology’s interdisciplinary seminar, in the EUSP’s Gold Hall. In his speech, Ruda raised the following questions: What is political affect? Is there a genuine political affect? What are its specifics?

Martin van Gelderen, an expert in the history of political thought, shared his reflections on the vast gap between classical republican theory and the modern political structure of the EU. He examined this from the perspectives of two of the most important Republican ideologues: James Madison and Hugo Grotius.

As part of the Interdisciplinary seminar of the Political Science and Sociology Department the EUSP hosted Rogers Brubaker, a globally known specialist on questions of ethnicity and nationalism and Professor of Sociology at UCLA. - The size of the audience speaks for itself and for Rogers Brubaker, - said Artem Magun, the Dean of the Political Science and Sociology Department. He also thanked the Kazan Center for Cultural Studies of Post-Socialism who initiated and facilitated the visit of the distinguished guest.

More than half a century has passed since a group of sociologists and anthropologists announced the creation of a new language for describing the social structure, in which “groups”, characterized by certain attributes, superseded communications between individuals and organizations. The development of mathematical theories of networks supplemented this language with a formal method for analyzing empirical information, presenting alternatives to traditional statistics.

 

The contemporary sociological dictionary is obliged to Roland Roberston for the development and the popularization of the terms globalization and glocalization. In 1968, Roberston put forth a thesis that the sphere of culture has a decisive meaning for the categorization of the world, and began to develop the theory of globalization, which allows the conceptualization of the not only as a structure of changes, but also as changes that originate at the level of the consciousness of individuals.
