A new episode of the Podcast "History Is Just Beginning" is on the air. This time the theme is "The Caucasian War: History and Memory".  This war became the longest military confrontation in the history of the Russian Empire. Today it is well remembered in the North Caucasus and hardly remembered at all in the rest of Russia.  Historians Amiran Urushadze and Vladimir Lapin discuss why the Russian Empire fought for the Caucasus for so long and how the mountain people managed to remain undefeated.

Before each new year, we talk about the state of regulation in Russia. For the country and the world 2022 was a year of hardship and tragedy. Therefore, even in such a bureaucratic area as control and supervision, there were major changes. 

Congratulations to Ekaterina Khonineva, a graduate and lecturer at the Faculty of Anthropology, on her Ph.D. dissertation: "Semiotic ideologies and spiritual practices in modern Russian Catholicism: anthropological aspects".

The authoritative agency Round University Ranking (RUR) has published the results of its annual study — the world subject ranking of universities for 2022 for "Arts and Humanities". 

Considering all the challenges of the present EUSP has revamped its existing international programs and improved their accessibility, depth of studies and relevance.

The EUSP community mourns the death of Risto Alapuro, Finnish sociologist, who had a long-standing association with our university and played the founding role in the organization, evolution and survival of the former Department of Political Science and Sociology and current Department of Sociology at European University at St. Petersburg. Risto will be always remembered as a particularly optimistic, inspiring and attentive friend, colleague and advisor.

This book provides a theoretically and empirically grounded examination of the struggle for maternity care in contemporary Russia, framed by changes to the healthcare system and the roles of its participants after socialism. The chapters consider multiple perspectives and interactions between women and professionals and the structural and institutional pressures they face when striving for better conditions and treatment.

The European University at St. Petersburg and the State Hermitage Museum open the School of Arts and Cultural Heritage. The school will combine master's degrees in the history of art and philology, as well as a professional retraining program "The Modern Museum: Management Methods, Practices of Cultural Interpretation".

The New League of Universities opens course registration. If you are a student at one of the four universities of the New League (European University, Shaninka, New Economic School and Skoltech), you can enroll in open electives.

Artem Nedoluzhko, Director for Development of the Laboratory of Paleogenomics of the European University, and a group of researchers from Russian and Norwegian scientific institutions have published an article in the international journal Frontiers in Genetics (Q2, impact factor: 4.772). The work is devoted to the study of the role of intergeneric hybridization and its adaptive potential for evolution. 

Researchers from the European University and the Sergey Berezin Medical Institute (MIBS) have calculated the effectiveness of Russian vaccines against lung damage during COVID-19 waves caused by  the Delta and Omicron strains. The effectiveness of two doses of Sputnik V was 56%. The effectiveness of three doses was 71%.  EpiVacCorona was not shown to be effective. 

Historians Amiran Urushadze and Yulia Safronova discuss how the tsar-liberator is remembered — from the moment of regicide to the present.

The Journal opens with a “Declaration on the Establishment of a New Association of Academic Journals in the Humanities”. The decision to establish the Association was made at the Round Table "Russian Journals in the Humanities in a Changing Academic Landscape,"  held at the European University on March 25, 2022. The declaration was signed by the editors of more than 20 Russian academic journals in the humanities and social sciences.

Artem Nedoluzhko, the Director for Development at the EUSP Laboratory of Paleogenomics, and a group of researchers from a number of Russian scientific institutions have published a commentary article in the prestigious international journal Nature Communications (Q1, impact factor: 14.919).

A New League of Universities debate club tournament was held on June 5. Over the course of the spring term, students of the universities participating in the league (EUSP, Skoltech, NES and Shaninka) practiced and developed their rhetorical skills and took part in practice debates at weekly workshops. The final event of the season was the New League Tournament, where several EUSP teams were represented.  

For the second year in a row, the university ranks 19th in the Humanities. In the "Social Sciences," it was ranked 29th.

We continue the rubric with stories of our graduates. Today we are publishing a review by Lyubov Chernysheva, a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Amsterdam. We recently congratulated her on defending her Ph.D. thesis “Digital Transformation of Neighboring Urban Communities (St. Petersburg, Russia case study)”.  

Benjamin Peters, a professor at the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA has published a review of From Russia with Code in “The Soviet and Post-Soviet Review”.
