The first day of the conference culminates with a lecture by Stephen Bann, “The Exact Moment: Representing History in Delaroche’s Assassination of the Duc de Guise”, that will analyzed the significance of the work for French history painting.
Stephen Bann is Emeritus Professor of History of Art at the University of Bristol and a fellow a the British Academy. He is the author of a number of books, including Romanticism and Rise of History and Parallel lines: Printmakers, Painters, and Photographers in Nineteenth-Century France, and numerous essays on the art of Delaroche and the representation of history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
