Loss and the Social Life of Climate Change
Rebecca Elliott (LSE)

«What can climate change contribute to sociology? The talk will outline the sociology of loss as a new and distinct project for social scientific study of climate change. The sociology of loss centers questions about disappearance, destruction, and depletion, losses that can be compensated and those that cannot, and losses that are resisted, mourned, or even desired. I will illustrate these dimensions with reference to my research on flood insurance and climate change in the United States, with a focus on contested visions of loss and the politics thereof. The talk will further contextualize this project in broader interdisciplinary moves towards work on "the social life of climate change"».

To get familiarized with the topic, you might want to read Rebecca's article «The sociology of climate change as a sociology of loss»
