The course introduces students to current social situation in the Russian Arctic and to complex relations between today’s Arctic indigenous (and other) population and the oil and gas companies working in the region. The course is aimed at Russian and international students and young professionals who are interested in the topic and (or) are planning to work in the Arctic or with Arctic issues.

The course includes the following topics: general information about the region; general information about the Arctic population; indigenous Arctic people today: social and gender aspects; traditional indigenous knowledge about nature and human relations with nature; a short history of the energy industry in the Arctic; social consequences of oil and gas extraction in the region; oil and gas extraction from indigenous perspective.
